Truckers’ Fatigue Can Lead to Big Injuries

Federal regulations in place are meant to restrict the number of hours long haul truckers can be on the road in an attempt to prevent truck driver fatigue. Why? Because fatigued driving is dangerous driving. This is particularly true when the driver is behind the wheel of an oversized vehicle weighing thousands of pounds. Still, truckers’ fatigue does happen all too often and it can lead to big injuries in the event of a crash.

Truckers’ Fatigue Can Lead to Big Injuries

Unfortunately, despite federal and state regulations placing restrictions on the number of hours a trucker can spend behind the wheel of their semi-truck or tractor trailer, truckers continue to operate their vehicles while fatigued. This is true for several reasons. For starters, not all truckers comply with these regulations. Furthermore, some truckers drive long distances just to get to the beginning of their official trucking route. It is also worth considering the fact that even drivers who are in compliance with regulations and start off on the road fresh-faced and well-rested still can get fatigued driving for extended periods of time. This may be especially true when you consider that they spend long stretches on monotonous roads with similar scenery passing them along the way.

When truckers operate their big rigs while fatigued, it can spell disaster for everyone on or near the roadway. Fatigue reduces a driver’s ability to quickly react to impending hazards. It also makes it difficult for a driver to focus on the road and safely operate their vehicle. Of course, fatigue can also lead to a driver’s eyelids getting heavy and closing their eyes or even falling into sleep altogether. All of these symptoms of fatigue can easily lead to devastating crashes.

Because of the size and weight of large trucks, truck accident fatalities are always a risk. For those who survive these tragic accidents, they can still be left with life-altering injuries such as:

  • Spinal cord trauma
  • Traumatic brain injuries
  • Severe burns
  • Broken bones
  • Damage to internal organs

These are injuries that are not only painful and debilitating in and of themselves but can completely alter the course of a victim’s life. Those with such injuries may be permanently disabled and unable to return to work. They may not be able to participate in the activities that used to bring them joy. This is why damages available in accident cases include more than medical expenses. Compensable damages also include loss of earning capacity, pain and suffering, and loss of enjoyment of life. Be sure that all of these costs are included in any damages claim.
